HOW TO PLACE ADS:
The system is proactive (allowing you to place ads that even run on the tickertape and look for teachers who match your criteria) and reactive (because teachers can search jobs and find you).
- Go to www.secondarysupply.co.uk.
- On the top menu bar you will see a button for SCHOOLS. Click on that.
- This will take you to an informational page. But, on the left of the screen and below the tickertape you will see buttons for both SCHOOL LOGIN and SCHOOL REGISTRATION. Initially you will need to use the SCHOOL REGISTRATION facility. Only on subsequent visits, when you already have a password and username recognised by the website, will you simply use the SCHOOL LOGIN
REGISTRATION
- Click on SCHOOL REGISTRATION
- Here you should carefully input your email address, a password of your creation (we recommend an alpha-numeric password that employs a combination of 8 digits and letters, so something like s1mpl1fy is good), the school name, your name (to accommodate supply coordinators etc), the headteacher’s name, the telephone number you wish to use and your fax number.
- Please note that, in common with the convention on all such systems, an asterisk denotes a field where you must insert a response. If you fail to do that the system will reject the registration. What it will then do is throw up a new screen and on the top of that you’ll be asked to input the detail you previously neglected to input. It will keep doing that until you get it right! But, here, you’re not being asked for anything that is not easy to enter!
- When you have done all of that, and made a note of the details you’ve input here, press REGISTER.
- At this point an email is sent to the webmaster telling them of your registration.
- You will now be shown a screen, if you did everything correctly (and it’s easy) which states ‘My Account – thankyou for registering – Welcome ****** - please use the options on the left’.
- Those options are underneath MY ACCOUNT (which is simply a header), and are EDIT DETAILS, ADD NEW JOB, CURRENT JOBS, and FIND TEACHERS.
EDIT DETAILS
- If you click on EDIT DETAILS you’ll see the information that you already input when you registered. Except, for your security, this will not show your password.
- You may now update any of these details (if you made a typo or the headteacher changes). Or you can change the password.
- If you make any changes, remember to press the UPDATE button to ensure that they are saved.
ADD NEW JOB
- If you now press ADD NEW JOB you will be presented with a different screen which states ‘Add Job – please enter your details’
- Here you are asked for a Job Title (the response can be anything you choose, but it might be ‘HEAD of YEAR, 12th GRADE, IDEALLY a SCIENCE SPECIALIST’ or something of the sort). Try not to make this ridiculously long!
- The Subject entry next must be a selection from a drop-down menu. Hopefully you will find what you want there, but if it’s not there then please tell the agency and an additional item will be added to the options as soon as they have a moment. You may have to use the nearest-fit-solution in the interim.
- The Location entry next must be a selection from a drop-down menu. Hopefully you will find what you want there, but if it’s not there then please tell the agency and an additional item will be added to the options as soon as they have a moment. You may have to use the nearest-fit-solution in the interim.
- The Reference can be something of your own devising. We advise that you construct a reference that tells you who has authorised the ad, what it’s for, and when it’s being placed. You should construct such a system and be consistent in its use because the system will allow you to sort jobs by reference, and when you have amassed a few it makes sense to do this.
- The Description field allows you to write a detailed job and candidate specification with no real limit on words. Please ensure that this is professional, legal, decent, honest and truthful, and that it is in no way contravening legislation on discrimination etc etc. You are also advised to compose this carefully, ideally in a Word document elsewhere and where you can check the grammar and spelling. That way you can copy and paste the text into field and have some confidence that you have not made any embarrassing gaffes!
- Bear in mind that the agency will review this text to ensure that there is nothing embarrassing or illegal being posted in the institution’s name on the agency’s site. We cannot spend time rewriting texts though we will try to correct anything major.
- Next you have 3 different calendars. By clicking onto the calendars one at a time you will find that you are presented with a scrollable calendar. Find the date you want using the cursor then press enter. The selected date will then be shown in the window (in the form YYYY-MM-DD). These 3 dates tell you when the Ad Expires, when the Job Starts, and when the Job Ends.
- You are then asked for a Contact Name. It should be whoever is likely to be free to answer enquiries about this particular job.
- You are then asked for their telephone, fax and email details. Again, these should be available / manned. Don’t use details of somebody who is going off on holiday or won’t answer their phone or emails, or turn on their fax!
- You should find that the predictive system wil help you as it offers you any details which are already on the system for you.
- When all of this detail is in, and you’re sure it’s correct, press CREATE JOB to lodge it with the system.
- An email is then sent automatically to tell the agency of your job and have it Okd.
- Your job should then, when Okd, appear on the tickertape system. By clicking on that item on the tickertape any teacher can see your full contact details and contact you directly.
- It’s worth mentioning here that you could edit your job texts to tell candidates to contact the agency in the first instance – you will need to think about whether some of the recruitment process might be best handled by them instead of your institution. But it’s your choice.
- You will now get an Un-Assigned Job screen. Our new job will be listed there. You will be able to edit or delete it.
- The same screen will also, in due course, list Assigned and Completed jobs.
FINDING TEACHERS
- If you now click on the menu option marked FIND TEACHERS you will be presented with the teachers who are currently available.
- You can now see all teachers in the system. If a teacher has declared themselves to be a ‘Lion Tamer’ and you’d put ‘Lion Tamer’ in your ad headline then you could use the ‘Find Teachers’ option (without having anything in the locations or subject boxes, or even the availability boxes) to have the system find that teacher. Furthermore, all of the details of that lion-taming teacher will then pop up as you press the Find Teachers button.
- At this point you can call the agency and tell them that you wish to be put in contact with the aforementioned lion-tamer. You will know quite a bit about them but the agency will have their contact details and will manage this process.
